1 Data Sources
Before embarking on TA of any kind, the analyst needs to source trading data related to the market of his choice.
Historical Intraday (IEOD) and end of day (EOD) data for Nifty, BankNifty and other stocks is provided here (click here) on TradeWithMe as a service for Technical Analysts and others. Incremental data is currently provided as a free of charge service, while historical data is a nominally priced offline access service.
For the Indian stock market, realtime data is provided by several providers with a focus that can be near real time to end of day choices. Based on the objectives such as short term vs long term trading, one may choose a data provider that meets your trading objective.
Last update : 12th August 2014. No significant changes to key data providers list.
1.1 Data for intraday trading:
If you are an intraday trader, you would be interested in tick or at least minute by minute data so that you can analyse data and use it for making effective trades with minimum delay.
1.2 Data for short term or positional trading:
In this case, you are not interested in real time data. You could be using data from free resources such as Yahoo or Google. This is provided as a default by some of the data providers, when you dont subscribe to their data services.
1.3 Investbulls - http://investbulls.com/
Investbulls offers a mix of 200 popular stocks and futures whose data is provided in real time with an update frequency of around 2-10 seconds. The service is priced reasonably at Rs 600 per month for typical use. Check more details on their website. If you are not interested in real time data, then their software automatically provides free delayed data from Yahoo. Support is provided through Yahoo or Gtalk messengers during and around market hours.
1.4 Globaldatafeeds - http://www.globaldatafeeds.in/
Globaldatafeeds provides data of all NSE futures and options with a second by second data update frequency. They have now added all stocks in the cash section of NSE as well. The service is a premium service and typically costs about Rs 1600 per month for five simultaneous real time symbol access (these symbols can be changed to access more data). They also provide an end of day batch data update of 1 minute data for your use of all of the symbols on their database. Check more details on their website. Support is provided through their Livezilla online chat support service during and around market hours.
1.5 Market Data Provider - http://www.market-data-provider.com/
A comprehensive data provider covering all stock exchanges in India and both stocks, options and futures. Effective pricing is similar to Globaldatafeeds. Check out more details on their website. If you are not interested in real time data, then their software automatically provides free delayed data from Yahoo. They provide 24 x 7 support using their Livezilla support service.
1.6 Realtime Data Express - http://www.realtimedataexpress.com/index.aspx
Update: This data source seems to have shut shop. Not available anymore.
1.7 TruedataIndia - http://www.truedataindia.com/index.php
Another data provider who provides both real time and end of day data. The last time I used their service, the connectivity was through Yahoo. Have asked them whether this has changed. Will update here, once known.
1.8 Free EOD Data through GetBhavcopy - http://www.getbhavcopy.com/
A good source of free EOD data for positional traders.
This is an initial started list, which will be updated time to time also with user comments on their performance.
For the Nifty day trader, Investbulls is the most inexpensive service. Day traders wanting more stocks and options can look at MDP. Those interested only in EOD data can consider Realtimedata express or Bhavcopy.
Note: send me your comments at [email protected] on additional data sources and feedback on data source performance so that we can incorporate them into a subjective rating.
